Franklin – William Alexander "Alec" Phillips, Jr., 76, passed away May 4, 2024 in Old Dominion Rehabilitation and Nursing.  Born in Richmond and raised in Tappahannock, Alec moved to Franklin when he was 13 and was a son of the late William A. Phillips, Sr. and Ruth Olliff Phillips.

Alec was a graduate of Franklin High School and served in the US Air Force.  He attended Chowan College and Virginia Commonwealth University.  Alec was a retired senior lab technician for Union Camp Corporation and was brought up in High Street United Methodist Church.

Alec was a weight lifter and golfer.  He was the 1968 National Junior College Golf Champion for Chowan College, a member of the 1968 National Junior College All American Golf Team, and was inducted in the Chowan College Hall of Fame in 1994.  Alec was a longtime member and club champion at Cypress Cove Country Club.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 49 years Celeste Spence Phillips, a son Brian Spence Phillips, a sister Allene P. Atkinson (Mike), a brother Stephen K. Phillips (Nancy), and nieces and nephews.
