William S. Moore, Sr.

Portsmouth-William  Smithy "Smitty" Moore, 99, died Thanksgiving Day, November 28, 2024. Mr. Moore was a native of Franklin and a son of the late Eugene V. and Philena Rivers Moore. He was also predeceased by his wife of 50 years, Jean Butler Moore, a sister Lena M. Beale and a brother, Eugene V. Moore, Jr.

Smitty was an Army Veteran of WWII. He was a Sergeant in the 23rd Corps of the Third Army in the European Theatre earning three battle stars among other citations. Smitty attended The College of William and Mary and was retired for Rices Nachmans.

Survivors include a son, The Hon. William S. "Billy" Moore, Jr. and his wife Sharon of Portsmouth, two grandsons, William S. Moore III, and Landon K. Moore and his wife, Jennifer, three great grandchildren Peyton, Kelsey and Devon Moore.

A graveside service will be held at 11AM Saturday , November 30, 2024 in Poplar Spring Cemetery, Franklin with the Rev. Dr. Charles Qualls officiating. The family would like to thank Bon Secours Hospice, especially Hannah and Denise and caregiver Bunny Ward and special caregiver Lisa Tucker . In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
