Franklin – Vivian Brown "Spike" Harrell, Jr. 87, died August 21, 2010 at the East Pavilion. He was born in Nansemond County, a son of the late Otelia Vaughan and Vivian Brown Harrell, Sr. and was predeceased by a brother, David Brown Harrell and two sisters, Virginia Harrell Whitehurst and Nell Harrell. Mr. Harrell was a retired Eastern Regional Supervisor for the Virginia Department of Agriculture, and an active member of the Southampton County Agricultural Museum. He was a member of the Franklin Congregational Christian Church and a former member of Hunterdale Christian Church where he had been a member of the Laymen's Fellowship, active in the Sunday School Department, and sang in the choir. Spike enjoyed good fellowship and his many friends.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 62 years, Essie Mae Joyner Harrell; and two daughters, Cindy H. Hunting and her husband, Rich, and Nancy Page Harrell, all of Franklin.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11 am Monday, August, 23, at Poplar Spring Cemetery with the Rev. James H. Hyatt, Jr. and the Rev. James W. Browder, III officiating.
