Franklin – Thomas Edwin Daughtrey, Sr.,79,went to be with the Lord June 23, 2007. He was born in Buckhorn, a son of the late Edwin Parker and Sadie Holland Daughtrey. Tommy was a member of Sedley Baptist Church where he was a member of the Men's Bible Class. He served as a trustee for the church and was a former building fund treasurer and deacon for many years. He was employed for 37 years by Camp Manufacturing Company, which became Union Bag Camp Corporation, then Union Camp Corporation, and which is now International Paper, as a converting (sheet finishing) supervisor and assistant superintendent.
Tommy especially loved hunting, fishing, and all sports and was a charter member of Sedley Hunt Club. In his younger years, he played Franklin High School football and then County League Baseball. He served with the Merchant Marines and National Guard and was a member of Hunterdale Fire Department. He served two terms on the Southampton County Board of Supervisors until the Franklin District was annexed by the City of Franklin. He was very devoted to those he served in this capacity and was extremely proud to be part of the county government. After completion of his terms in the county government, Tommy devoted his senior years to his wife, family, church, yard, and garden.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 59 years, Catherine Tillery Daughtrey; one daughter, Linda Daughtrey Simmons and husband, Warren, of Courtland; one son, Thomas Daughtrey, Jr, of Chesapeake; a son-in-law, Tom Reed,of Courtland; three grandchildren, Stephen Augustus Simmons and wife, Annette, Jonathan Michael Daughtrey, and Christopher Thomas Reed; two sisters, Anne O'Brien of Franklin and Gladys Atkins of Midlothian; three brothers, Mills (Pete) Daughtrey of Carrsville, Raymond Daughtrey of Holland, and Edwin Daughtrey of Franklin. Mr. Daughtrey was predeceased by a daughter, Dianne Daughtrey Reed, and two sisters, Nell D. Story and Faye D. Turner.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 am Wednesday at Sedley Baptist Church with the Rev. Armand Jalbert, The Rev. David Johnson, and the Rev. John Tadlock officiating. Burial will follow in Rosemont Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 pm Tuesday at Wright Funeral Home, Franklin.
