Cumberland, VA- Shirley Mae Porter Carden, 89, went to be with her Lord, January 28, 2021. She was born in Franklin, and grew up in the Sunbeam area of Southampton County, had been a former resident of Richmond, and enjoyed the last 25 years living at her daughter's home in Cumberland. She was a 1948 Graduate and Salutatorian of Newsoms High School and attended Madison College. Shirley was a member of Richmond First Baptist Church and a former associate real estate broker with Bowers, Nelms, and Fonville, now Long & Foster. She was predeceased by her parents, Simpson Edgar and Virgie Bryant Porter, and her oldest son, Richard O. Carden II.

Left to cherish her memory are her three children, Susan Lipscomb Baskette and her husband Roland, William David Carden and his wife Susan, and John Earl Carden and his wife Jan, a daughter in law Patty Carden, and a former daughter in law, Sandra Carden, seven grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at 1PM, Wednesday, February 3, 2021, in Southampton Memorial Park, 27396 Pretlow Rd., Franklin, VA 23851, with Dr. Jim Somerville officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital, 501 St. Jude Pl., Memphis, TN 38105.
