Courtland – Sherman Lee Joyner, Sr., 88, passed away September 10, 2019 in Southside Regional Medical Center in Petersburg.  Born in Southampton County, he was a son of the late William "Billy" Joyner and Essie Blythe Joyner and was also predeceased by his brother James William Joyner and sister-in-law Iola "Dick" Joyner.  Sherman was retired from Suburban Propane and was a member of Hunterdale Baptist Church.  He was a loving husband, father and grandfather  who enjoyed gardening, yard work and loved horses.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 63 years Jean Velvin Joyner; a daughter Betty Jean Whitby (Thomas); four sons Lee Joyner (Lisa), Wayne Joyner (Jody), Glenn Joyner (Janet), and David "Shoebox" Joyner; former daughter-in-law Janet A. Joyner; twelve grandchildren Jennifer Joyner (Josh), Leigh Ann Fillmore (Craig), Brian Joyner (Kelly), Doug Whitby (Ashley), Amanda Whitby, Katie Joyner, Taylor Joyner, Ashley Morris (Dustin), Sara Story (Jake), Lauren Morgan (Lance), Adam Joyner (Bethany), and Abbie Joyner; thirteen great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and a special grand dog Lilly.   The family would like to thank his special caregiver Dorothy Jordan.

A Funeral Service will be held at 11 AM Friday, September 13, 2019 in Wright Funeral Home with Rev. Wayne Joyner (Sherman's son) and Rev. Howard Vinson officiating.  Burial will follow in Southampton Memorial Park.  The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM Thursday in the funeral home and suggests that memorial donations be made to Hunterdale Baptist Church or a favorite charity. www.wrightfuneralhome.org
