Courtland – Samuel Wayne "Sammy" Stephenson, Jr., 60, passed away February 21, 2022 in Sentara Obici Hospital with his family by his side.  Born in Franklin, he was the son of the late Samuel Wayne Stephenson, Sr. and Julia Stephenson Gray.

Sammy was a 1980 graduate of Southampton Academy and was a Heavy Equipment Operator for VDOT in Capron for 21 years.  Prior to working at VDOT, he worked at the Ash-Plant and was given the nickname "Ashman".

Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 20 years, Sandra Porter "Sandy" Stephenson; three sons, Samuel Scott Stephenson, Vance Joyner Stephenson (Missy Coe), and William Alan Stephenson; a daughter, Samantha Elaine Stephenson; many other people that he considered his own children; two grandkids, Lillie Constante and Laine Stephenson; his step-father, Franklin Gray; a sister, Selinda Stephenson Green and a step-sister, Marian Gray Lewis; many nieces and nephews; and numerous other family and friends.

A Funeral Service will be held at 2 PM Saturday, February 26, 2022 in Wright Funeral Home with Pastor Randy Wright officiating.  Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 PM Friday in the funeral home.
