Sally Heyward Owens

Courtland – Sally Coles Heyward Owens, 88, passed away August 26, 2026 in her home. Born in Columbia, SC, she was a daughter of Roger Moore Heyward and Dorothy Allen Heyward and was also predeceased by a sister, Dorothy H. King.

Sally went to the University of South Carolina where she was a member of Tri-Delta Sorority.

She was married to the late Lawrence “Lonnie” Owens, Jr. for 51 years. She is survived by their four sons: Buford “Bo” Smith Owens and his wife Sylvia and their children, Kevin and Megan, of Courtland; Roger Heyward Owens and his son Walker of Courtland; Lawrence Owens, III of Courtland; and Rhett and his wife Julia and their children Mitchell (fiancé Ashlynn), Coles, and Nate of Emporia, VA. She is also survived by two nieces, Dorothy Allen Badger of Charleston, SC and Coles Heyward Slifer of Chapin, SC.

The Owens moved to Virginia in 1972. Sally worked at Southampton Academy for over 20 years. She loved the area, was an avid gardener, and attended St. Luke’s Episcopal Church.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11AM Friday, September 18, 2026 in St. Luke’s Episcopal Church with Rev. James W. Browder, III officiating. Burial will be private. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to Southampton Academy or St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Courtland, VA.
