Ryan L. Kirkland
Courtland – Ryan Lawrence Kirkland, 30, died as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident on March 21, 2007. Born in Franklin, Ryan was a 1999 graduate of
The College of William and Mary and was currently pursing his bachelors degree in Nursing at Paul D. Camp Community College in Franklin. He was the multi-faceted talent behind his floral arranging business and was a well-known server at Fred's Restaurant and The Pace House Inn in Franklin.
Left to cherish his memory are his mother, Sandra Johnston Kirkland; his sister, Kirby Claire Kirkland of Baltimore, Maryland; his brother, Patrick Maltby Galvin of St. Paul, Minnesota; his partner, Lawrence Brewer of Hampton, New Hampshire; maternal grandmother, Katherine Kee Kirkland of Courtland, Virginia; uncle, Joseph H. Kirkland and wife, Sarah, of Galatia, North Carolina; two aunts, Carol Smith Unruh, of Bellingham, Massachusetts and Dorothy "Shortie" Harris of Sedley, Virginia; two cousins, Rob Bradshaw and Kristi Bradshaw Atkins and many friends. Ryan was predeceased by his father, Thurloe Lawrence Kirkland, his maternal grandparents, Evelyn and Clair Johnston, and his paternal grandfather, Jake Kirkland.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday at Grace Memorial United Methodist Church, Sedley, with the Rev. Mary Marshall and the Rev. Elizabeth Von Trapp Walker officiating. A gathering to celebrate Ryan's life will follow the memorial service at Fred's Restaurant. The family will also receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Wright Funeral Home, Franklin, and suggests that, because Ryan was so passionate and dedicated to caring for others, memorials be made to the Ryan Kirkland Memorial Nursing Scholarship, c/o Paul D.
