Courtland – Roy Anderson Griffin, 89, died February 9, 2008. He was born in Chowan County, N. C., and reared in Nansemond County by his late parents, A. I. & Dodie Forehand Griffin. Mr. Griffin was predeceased by his wife of 67 years, Golden Outland Griffin who passed away November 15, 2007; a granddaughter, T. Brooke Powell Michels; three sisters, Viola Johnson, Mary Belle Corbitt, and Beulah Jones; and one brother, Joe Griffin. He was an Army veteran of WW II serving in the European Theater and was a member of the Church of God. He was retired from Franklin Concrete Products and the Tidewater News and was an avid fisherman and gardener.
Survivors include two daughters, Teressa Holt and husband, Charles, of Courtland, Anita Ballard and husband, J. W., of Ivor; one son, Roy Anderson Griffin , Jr., and wife, Sandy, of Chesapeake; one sister, Eula Johnson of Suffolk; seven grandchildren, Jay Ballard, Roy A. Griffin, III, and wife, Cindy, Robbie Ballard, James "Bo" Powell, Lisa Lance, Derrick Holt and wife, Beth, Lynn Blythe and husband, John; seven great-grandsons; four great-granddaughters; and many nieces and nephews.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p. m. Tuesday in Wright Funeral Home with the Rev. Ernest Cary and the Rev. Matthew Kidd officiating. Burial, with military honors, will follow in Southampton Memorial Park. The family will receive friends today (Monday) from 7 to 8:30 p. m. and other time at the residence, 25536 New Market Road, Courtland.
