Boykins
Boykins – Robert Bascom "Bobby" Poland, 88, widower of Jeanette Gulliver Poland, passed away September 23, 2020 in his home. Born in Brunswick County and raised in Boykins, he was the son of the late William B. and Sallie Walker Poland. He is also predeceased by a daughter, Amee Jeanette Poland Evans, two sisters, Margaret Thompson and Sarah Michlik, and a brother, Tucker Poland.
Bobby was a graduate of Boykins High School and the Medical College of Virginia. When Bobby returned to Boykins after serving in the U.S. Army, he became the pharmacist and owner of Boykins Pharmacy for over 40 years. He was also a past member of the Virginia Pharmaceutical Association.
Bobby was a member of Boykins Lions Club, Meherrin Valley Hunt Club and enjoyed being a member of both the senior and junior Meet and Eat Groups at No. 8 School House. He was also a member of Boykins United Methodist Church.
Bobby enjoyed his daily trip to the post office. While touring the town and cemetery to make sure all was in order, he often stopped by the town office to offer his two cents worth. Part of his daily adventures included stopping to take his grand dog, Roxy, her treat and get a sweet treat of his own.
"Sweet Bobby", as known by close family and friends, was loved by so many. He will be missed by all the lives he touched during the many years he served the Boykins community as their pharmacist.
Left to cherish his memory is his son, Robert Chet Poland (Connie); special friend Ann Parker; a sister, Ray Bradshaw; a brother, William "Billy" Poland; four grandchildren, Robert C. Poland, Jr. (April Gilley), Richard, W. Poland (Skylar), Casey D. Fleming (Zack), and Travis R. Darden; and two great-grandchildren, Emma and Graham Fleming.
A Graveside Service with Military Honors will be held at 2PM Saturday, September 26, 2020 in Beechwood Cemetery with Rev. Dr. Garland Hines and Rev Michael Baugham officiating. The family will receive friends Friday from 6 to 8 PM in Wright Funeral Home in Boykins and suggests that memorial donations be made to the Boykins United Methodist Church Building Fund or the Huntington's Disease Foundation, P.
