Ivor – Robert Stewart Grizzard, 64, passed away July 7, 2011 at Sentara Obici Hospital. He was born in Richmond and was predeceased by his father, Norfleet T. Grizzard and a brother, L. Wayne Grizzard. He was a member of Corinth Friends Meeting.
Robert was a retired bleach plant operator with Union Camp Corporation and a twenty eight year retiree from the U. S. Air Force and the Virginia Air National Guard and was a Viet Nam veteran. He was a former Junior Vice Commander of VFW Post 4411, a former president and lieutenent of the Courtland Fire Department, and presently was a member of the Ivor Volunteer Rescue Squad and Sedley Volunteer Fire Department. He was a past member of Franklin Fire and Rescue and the Drewryville Fire Department. He represented Southampton County on the Board of Directors of the Tidewater EMS Council. He was an instructor for the Southampton County Fire and Rescue Association and a member of the Ivor Ruritan Club and also served as past Zone 2 governor and lieutenant governor.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of twenty years, Sue Neave Grizzard; his mother, Kathleen Riegel Grizzard of Drewryville; one son, Richard S. "Ricky" Grizzard of Sedley; one daughter, Meg Holland of Windsor; two step-sons, Rusty Holland and Ben Holland (Heidi) all of Ivor; one brother, William Todd Grizzard (Peggy) of Valentines; sister-in-law, Cathy Grizzard of Drewryville; eight grandchildren, Nicholas, Julia, Tyler, and Tori Grizzard, all of South Carolina, Kaylee Holland of Windsor, Dallas Holland of Ivor; Cheyenne Abbs and Killian Phillips and numerous adopted children and grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 pm Sunday, July 10, 2011 at Wright Funeral Home, Franklin. The interment, with military honors, will follow in the Drewryville Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 pm today (Saturday) at the funeral home and suggests that memorials may be made to any fire department or rescue squad.
