Zuni – Richard John Slate, PC1 U.S. Navy (Ret.), 85, passed away February 7, 2018. Mr. Slate was a native of Cape Vincent, NY, a son of the late Charles Herman and Madeline Stevens Slate. He was also predeceased by his wife Susie Evans Slate and brothers, Francis and Robert Slate.

He retired from the US Navy in 1970 as a Postal Clerk First Class and had retired as a Longshoreman in 1994. He was a member of the ILA Local 1970 Norfolk, a member of Mt. Carmel Christian Church and a former volunteer at Portsmouth Naval Hospital. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He is survived by daughters, Gail Lee (Rollie), Brenda Slate, and Karen Marie Meade (Robert), son John L. Slate (Roxanne), sisters, Barbara Schneider and Mary Lowe, a brother Donald Slate and nine grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

A funeral will be held at 1 PM Saturday February 10, 2018 in Wright Funeral Home, Franklin with Chaplain Tim Cormany officiating. Burial with Military Honors will follow at Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Walters. The family will receive friends from 12 noon until the start of the service. A reception will follow the service at VFW Post 4411, Franklin.
