Como – Nellie Bruce Sumner Gibson, 61, passed away May 5, 2008 in her home after a long battle with cancer. A former resident of Rocky Mount, she was born in Como, a daughter of the late Charles Bruce and Nell Amanda Howell Sumner. She attended Buckhorn Baptist Church and was predeceased by her former husband, William E. "Hoot" Gibson.
Survivors include her son, Alexander Derek Gibson and wife, Kelly, of Rocky Mount, NC and their children, Mia, Lexi and Reese; a brother, Charlie Bruce Sumner, Jr., and wife, Joyce, of Como; niece, Melissa S. Rountree of Como and her family and a nephew, W. Keith Hill and wife, Hope, of Murfeesboro and his family.
A memorial service led by Rev. John Hackney will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Buckhorn Baptist Church. The family will receive friends at the residence of Charlie and Joyce Sumner, 501 Parker Ferry Road, and in the church Fellowship Hall immediately after the service. Memorials may be made to Buckhorn Baptist Church or the American Cancer Society. Wright Funeral Home, Franklin, VA, is assisting the family.
