Franklin – Maude Griffin Young (Granny), 94, widow of Walter Luther Young, Sr., went to be with her Lord and Savior on July 2, 2007. Born in Nansemond County, she was a daughter of the late Benjamin Ocie and Annie Victoria Harrell Griffin. She was a graduate of Whaleyville High School and the University of Virginia Rural Institute of Nursing. She was a member of High Street United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, and a charter member of the Delaware Home Demonstration Club.
Left to cherish her memory is her daughter, Annie Lee Young Duff and husband, Cornelius, of Chuckatuck; her son, Walter L. Young, Jr. and wife, Betty Sue, of Courtland; brother, John Garland Griffin and wife, Barbara, of Suffolk; sister-in-law, Frances Saunders Griffin of Emporia; brother-in-law, George William Cooper of Portsmouth; seven grandchildren, Walt Young, III, and wife, Lynn, of Franklin, Susan Spivey and husband, Ed, Holly Giles and husband, George, Chris Young and wife, Kelly, all of Courtland, Herbert Duff and wife, Lucretia, of Smithfield, Annah Bowen and husband, Steve, of Burkeville, Lee Duff of Portsmouth; thirteen great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Young was predeceased by two sisters, Josephine G. Jory and Amy G. Cooper, and four brothers, Thornton H. Griffin, Benjamin O. Griffin, Preston Ray Griffin, and Lewis M. Griffin.
The funeral will be conducted Thursday at 11 am in the chapel of Wright Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. Reginald Warren and the Rev. Dr. Roger Crump officiating. Burial will follow in Southampton Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7 to 8:30 pm at the funeral home and suggest memorials be made to High Street United Methodist Church, P. O. Box 218, Franklin, VA. 23851.
