Stony Creek – Matt Duane Burgess, 65, passed away on December 17, 2022 in St. Mary's Hospital.  He was predeceased by his father, Roland Atlas Burgess.

Duane was a cabinet maker instructor for Greensville Correctional Center and grew up in Vincent's Gove United Methodist Church.  He was a member of South Hill Masonic Lodge #297 AF & AM and was an Eagle Scout.

Left to cherish his memory is his love of 25 years, Donna Marie Newbold; his mother, Shirley S. Burgess; a sister, Sheila Gillenwater; two brothers, Neil Burgess (Susan) and Dennis Burgess (Robin); and nieces and nephews, Greg Burgess (Kim), Leah Burgess (Ryan), Matthew Burgess (Jessie), Anneliese Schlachter (Ryan), Haley and Marissa Gillenwater, and Stuart Breeden (Mallory); and great nieces, great nephews and cousins.

A Funeral Service with Masonic Rites will be held at 2PM Wednesday, December 21, 2022 in Wright Funeral Home, Franklin with Rev. Mike Harrington officiating.  Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery, Courtland.  The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 PM Tuesday in the funeral home and also one hour prior to the service and suggests that in lieu of flowers memorial donations be made to the American Cancer Society.
