Franklin-Mary Winston Johnson Briggs, 84, passed away on October 28, 2016. She was born in Southampton County, the daughter of James A. and Lemma Garrett Johnson. She was predeceased by two brothers, James A. Johnson, Jr. and John W. Johnson.

She is survived by her husband of 61 years, James F. Briggs, Jr.; two daughters, Nancy B. Petters (Mike) and Elizabeth A. Briggs; two granddaughters, Sarah P. Fletcher (Dan) and Caroline G. Petters (fiancé Chris Sauer); a great-granddaughter, Marin E. Fletcher; a sister, Elizabeth J. Wright; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was a life-long member of Franklin Baptist Church and a choir member and soloist for over 50 years. Additionally, she was a member of the Franklin Music Study Club, the Franklin Book Club, and the DAR.

A memorial service celebrating her life will be held on Saturday, November 5, at 11:00 am in the chapel at Franklin Baptist Church in Franklin, VA. The service will be conducted by Rev. Steven R. Gibson. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the church parlor. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made to the Franklin Baptist Church Music Fund, 208 N. High St., Franklin, VA 23851 or to a charity of your choice.
