Franklin – Mary Lee Bassett, 83, passed away October 28, 2022, at Southampton Memorial Hospital .  She was born in Harlan County, Kentucky, and was a long time resident of Hampton since she was six years old.  She was a daughter of the late Richard Gordon Smith and Dorothy Parton Smith.  She was predeceased by her husband, Stafford Littleton Bassett, Jr.

Mary was a 1957 graduate of Hampton High School and was retired after 30 years from Civil Service at Fort Eustis.  She was a member of Hampton Women's Club, an officer in American Legion Post #48 Phoebus, and a volunteer at the Hampton Veteran's Hospital with over 1,000 volunteer hours served.

Left to cherish her memory is two sons, Jay Bassett (Donna) of Waverly and Brian Bassett of Surry, and two grandchildren, Virginia Lee Lauver (Jared) and Joseph Bassett.

Services will be private.
