Walters – Mark Wayne Carr, 68, passed away October 5, 2026. A lifelong resident of Walters, he was the son of the Late Lonnie Lee Carr, Jr. and Peggy Jean Vick Carr. He was also predeceased by his stepmother, Anne Williams.
For more than four decades, Mark served the City of Franklin with distinction as Deputy Fire Chief. As a dedicated instructor and mentor, he influenced generations of firefighters through his exemplary leadership, steadfast service, and personal integrity
Mark was deeply dedicated to his family, his friends, and the Fire Service he loved so much. As Deputy Chief, he gave his time, his strength and his heart to the department and to the people he served. He was loyal to his brothers and sisters in the Fire Service, and he took great pride in the responsibility that came with wearing the uniform and badge,
To know him was to know that he believed in things the right way. He could be tough, sometimes offering what was lovingly known as “tough love”, but behind that toughness was a heart that cared deeply. He expected the best from those around him because he saw their potential and wanted them to succeed. He earned the respect of everyone who had the privilege of working beside him, not simply because of his position but because of the man he was.
He was more than a Deputy Chief—he was a friend, a mentor, a leader, and a brother to many. His dedication to his work family was matched only by his devotion to his own family; above all else, he was a family man who loved his family fiercely and took great pride in all of them,
His loyalty, courage, dedication, and unmistakable presence will be deeply missed. The lessons he taught, the lives he touched, and the legacy he leaves behind will remain with those who knew and loved him.
Mark devoted many years to farming, a way of life that reflected his strong work ethic, determination, patience, and deep appreciation for the land. He took great pride in his work and in carrying on the traditions and values that farming represents.
Mark’s commitment to his community extended far beyond the farm. He served as Past President of the Walters Ruritan Club, giving generously of his time and leadership in support of his neighbors and the community he loved. He was also an Honorary Member with the Carrsville Volunteer Fire Department, an honor reflecting the respect and appreciation of those who knew his dedication to the community.
Whether Mark was working in the fields, serving his community through the Ruritan Club, or supporting the local volunteer fire departments, Mark believed in being there for others. He understood the importance of neighbors helping neighbors and giving back without expecting anything in return.
Mark will be remembered for his strong work ethic, generosity, dependability, and quiet willingness to help others. His years of service created lasting friendships and touched countless lives throughout the community.
Though the fields will be quieter without him and his place in the community will be deeply missed, the seeds Mark planted through his kindness, hard work, and service will continue to grow in the lives of those he touched.
Mark leaves behind a legacy woven through the people and places he held dear—his family, his faith, the farm, his friends, and the community he was always ready to serve. His presence will still be felt in the land he cared for, the neighbors he helped, and the countless lives made better simply by knowing him.
His love for the fire service also lives on through his children and through the many people he guided, encouraged, and inspired along the way. They will carry forward not only the lessons he taught, but also the strength, loyalty, and generous spirit that made Mark so deeply loved.
May Mark rest in peace and may his memory forever remain a blessing to his family, friends, and the community he served so faithfully.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 20 years, Shawn Lynette Carr; two sons, Trevis Wayne Carr (Jennifer) and Mark Richard “Richie” Carr (Kimberly) all of Walters; stepson Richard Hendrick (Tiffany) of Sedley; and a sister, Vicki Lynn Carr of Chesterfield and 6 grandchildren.
Special Acknowledgements: Mark leaves behind three special individuals who held an important place in his life: Michael “Davey” Conley, whom Mark regarded as another son, and his dear friends Phillip G. Carr and Robert “Ed” Whitley. Their friendship and support were invaluable to Mark throughout his years of farming. The family wishes to thank local farmers Rex Alphin, Sunset View Farms, Chris Carr, Jessica Carr, Exum Hill Farms, and DJ Lonsdale for all their assistance with year’s crop,
A Fireman’s Funeral will be held at 3 PM Sunday, October 11, 2026, at Wright Funeral Home with Pastor Randy Wright and Chief Vincent P. Holt (Ret.) officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
