Boykins – Marion Griffin Smith, 78, passed away December 31, 2016 at Southampton Memorial Hospital. Marion was a native of Southampton County and was a son of the late Forrest Olden Smith and Mary Griffin Smith. He was predeceased by his first wife Barbara Railey.
Marion was a graduate of Boykins High School, post graduate of Southampton High School and a 1964 graduate of VPI & SU. He was a former Virginia National Guardsman, President of Tri-country Banker Association as well as a member of various civic organizations. He was the former President of the Bank of Franklin. Also the former President\Co-owner of Whitley Peanut Company in Sedley, a buyer and sheller of seed peanuts. Marion enjoyed playing cards with his friends, fishing, and was a loyal supporter of Virginia Tech Athletics. Marion was a member of Boykins United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Kay Lomax Smith. Two sons, Craig Smith (Lisa) of Hampton, and Todd Smith (Kristen) of Williamsburg. One brother, Kenneth Smith (Margaret) of Boykins. Four grandchildren: Gabrielle Smith, Joshua Smith, Brett Smith and Bridgette Smith. Four nieces: Sharon Cobb, Miriam Birdsong, Susan Hiser and Kim Jones. Brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Jerry and Dorothy Grizzard.
A memorial service will be held at 4 pm Friday, January 6, 2017 at Wright Funeral Home in Franklin with the Rev. Michael Baugham officiating. A "Celebration of Life" reception will follow the service at the Cypress Cove Country Club. Memorial donations may be made to the Boykins Volunteer Fire Dept., P.O.
