Franklin – Margaret Johnson Rountree, 90, widow of Donald Edward "Sonny" Rountree, Sr., died August 2, 2008. She was born in Handsom, a daughter of the late Lena Britt and Eugene Thomas Johnson, Sr., and step-daughter of the late Daisy Mulder Johnson. Mrs. Rountree was predeceased by two sisters, Virginia J. Bryant and Marie J. Blythe; and five brothers, Linwood, Harry, Joseph, and William Johnson, and Eugene Johnson, Jr. She was a member of Mt. Horeb United Methodist Church, and after it closed, moved her membership to Newsoms United Methodist Church, where she was presently the oldest member. She was a Southampton Memorial Hospital Auxillary "Pink Lady", a member of the Senior Circle, and a volunteer with the Southampton County Historical Society. Margaret was retired as a postmaster from the Handsom post office.
Left to cherish her memory is her daughter, Dianne Elizabeth Rountree and friend, Earl Franzo, and her son, Donald E. Rountree, Jr., and wife, Jane, all of Henrico, NC; four grandchildren, Karen R. Kane and husband, Patrick, and Kevin Rountree all of Mechanicsville, Cheryl Brandberg and husband, John, of Mason, OH, and Anna Gosline and husband, Chris, of Sanford, FL; ; seven great-grandchildren, Kara, Keri, and Kora Kane and Jake, Emma Margaret, and Davis Brandberg, and Allison Elizabeth Gosline; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2 pm Monday in the chapel of Wright Funeral Home, Franklin, with the Rev. Darwin Edwards and the Rev. Willis Switzer, and the Rev. Greg Hand officiating. Interment will follow in Southampton Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 pm Sunday (today) at the funeral home and other times at Mrs. Rountree's home.
