Suffolk – Louis C. Carr, 77, won his final victory over cancer, passing to his Father on April 3, 2008. Born on January 1, 1931, he was the beloved son of the late Crawley & Daisy Carr of Nansemond County. A caring and generous soul, he touched the lives of many. Louis was predeceased by brothers, J. J., Marvin, and Cecil Carr, all of Suffolk, and sisters, Thelma Stephenson of Suffolk and Dorothy Holland of Norfolk.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Julia Mae Joyner Carr; children, L. Carroll Carr, Jr. (Susan) of Shawsville, Phyllis C. Johnson (Don) of Chesapeake, and Nancy C. Greene (Robert, Jr.) of Suffolk. Also surviving are grandchildren, Barnett Joyner Carr, Bent-Lee' Holland Carr, Jessica Ann Johnson, Julie Melissa Johnson, Derek Shawn Greene (Stacy), and Daniel Louis Greene (Ashley) and their son, Louis's great grandson, David Michael Greene. He is also survived by sisters, Barbara Gray (Melvin), Carolyn Duke (Raye), as well as sisters-in-law, Anne Carr, Helen Carr, and brother-in-law, John Stephenson, and a host of nieces and nephews and their families. He was predeceased by a sister-in-law, Hazel Darden (James) and is survived by in-laws, S. L. (Buck) Joyner, Jr. (Edna), Kathleen Slaton (John), and nieces and nephews in Julia's family.
Retired from his job as superintendent for maintenance and special projects at Union Camp Corporation following 39 years of dedicated service, Louis stayed busy in his community helping others, and through the years, was active as an Assistant Scout Master with Carrsville Boy Scout Troop 37. He was a member of Holland Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, chairperson of the trustees, a Sunday School class treasurer, Sunday School Director, stewardship chairman, chairperson of the Building and Grounds Committee, was an R. A. Leader and director of the Brotherhood organization. He was also active in the Carrsville Ruritan Club as well as the Senior Circle of Southampton Memorial Hospital. He was part of the Eager Beavers Seniors of Beaver Dam Baptist Church and was in the Grand Age group at Holland Baptist Church. He selflessly dedicated a portion of his life serving as on-site construction superintendent of the rebuilding of Holland Baptist Church following a fire. A man deeply rooted in nature, family, love of his fellow man, and serving the Lord, he will be missed by many.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 am Monday in the chapel of Wright Funeral Home with the Rev. Robert Bunn officiating. Interment will follow at Southampton Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 pm Sunday at the funeral home and suggests memorials be made to to the Holland Baptist Church Building Fund, P. O. Box 7086, Suffolk, Va. 23437.
