Newsoms – Lillie Mae Barnes Drake, 105, widow of Claude Drake, Sr., died February 17, 2008. She was born in Southampton County, a daughter of the late Henry Thomas and Cora Vick Barnes. Mrs. Drake was also predeceased by a daughter, Katherine Drake Winslow, two sisters, Rosa B. Taylor and Betty Sue B. Vann; a brother, Robert Barnes;and a great-grandson, William Drake. Lillie Mae was a good homemaker who loved gardening, flowers and vegetables, cooking for her family and playing rook. She was the oldest member of Newsoms Baptist Church and attended regularly until she became disabled.
Survivors include one daughter, Louise Drake Pixley of Franklin; one son, Claude Drake, Jr. and wife, Alma, of Newsoms; one sister, Mary (Lizzie) Barnes Drake of Newsoms; seven grandchildren, Michael Drake(Rebecca) and Cindy Drake Richmond (Joe), both of Newsoms, Dennis Drake (Patty), Wendall W. Pixley (Leah), and Nancy Pixley Hopkins (John), all of Franklin, Debra Winslow Blanks (Kyle) and Bobby Ray Winslow (Sharon), both of Suffolk; fifteen great-grandchildren, Susan D. Fisher, Amanda D. Hall, Matt Hopkins, Wendy Drake, Ryan Richmond, Tyler Blanks, Megan Hopkins, Katherine Blanks, Westley Drake, Kelsey Blanks, Christopher Richmond, Nathan Winslow, Rob Cutchins, Samantha Reed, Joshua Reed; and one great-great-grandchild, Neva Grace Hall.
A funeral will be conducted today at 2 p. m. at Newsoms Baptist Church with the Rev. Jason Wise, the Rev. Kenneth Williams and the Rev. Curtis Faison officiating.
