Capron – Lon Seabron "Skinny" Marks, 84, died March 13, 2009 at his residence. A lifelong resident of Southampton County, Skinny was born in Pope, Va., a son of the late Henry Earl and Ethel Davis Marks. He was predeceased by his wife, Georgie Belle Felts Marks, a sister, Katherine M. Whitehead and three brothers, Henry Earl, Jesse Thomas, and Aubrey Pope Marks. A lifelong farmer and member of Capron United Methodist Church, Skinny was a charter member of the Indiantown Hunt Club, a member of the Capron Ruritan Club, and a member of the Blackwater/Nottoway Riverkeeper Program, and was proud of the fact that the Program's annual Conservationist Award is named in his honor. He was an Army veteran of WW II.
Survivors include four daughters, Sandra M. Councill, Carolyn M. Bickham and husband, Ed, Ellen M. Butler and husband, Jerry, Diana M. McKinnie and husband, J. W.; eight grandchildren, Courtney Councill, Nealy B. Hansford, Gillette Councill, Lon Bickham, Joseph McKinnie, Anna Butler, Katie McKinnie, and Joanna Bickham; one brother, Ben Marks; and Skinny's loving caretaker and friend of fifty years, Fanny Barnes.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 am Monday at Capron United Methodist Church with the Rev, James M. Smith officiating. Interment, with military honors, will follow in the Capron Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the residence and suggests memorials be made to Southampton Hospice, 100 Fairview Drive, Franklin, Va. 23851, or the Blackwater/Nottoway Riverkeeper Program, P. O. Box 44, Sedley, Va. 23878. The family would like to thank all the caregivers who took care of Skinny during his six year illness.
