Obituary

Zuni – Kathryn T. Dunlap, 58, died at her home with her family at her side in Zuni, Va, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was an exceptional educator and teacher for 37 years, teaching children English, history, literature, and reading, and also special needs children. She was also principal of Virginia Country Day School for many years. The past five years, she taught at J. P. King Middle School in Franklin, where she was voted "Teacher of the Year" in 2006.
She is survived her husband, Cecil John Dunlap; two sons, Christopher Dunlap and Shawn Dunlap; dearest confidant, Danna Ballassai; her parents, Elsie and Frank Mello of Delray Beach, FL; sister, Roberta Martin and husband, William Martin; brother, Dr. Michael Mello and wife, Dr. Pamela McKnight; three nieces, Elizabeth Mello, Juliana Mello, and Caroline Mello; three nephews, Patrick Bagana, Alexander Martin, and Andrew Mello, all of South Dartmouth, MA; and hundreds of students and teachers whose lives she touched daily.
A memorial service will be held at 4:30 pm Tuesday at St. Jude's Catholic Church in Franklin, Va. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Kathryn T. Dunlap Memorial Fund, c/o Shawn Dunlap, Suntrust Bank, 117 W. Second Ave, Franklin, Va. 23851. Wright Funeral Home is assisting the family.
