Sedley – Jonathan Allen Hudgins, born December 5, 1960 in Raiford  Hospital on Second and Main streets in downtown Franklin, peacefully departed this life June 30 ^th at his home in Sedley, Virginia, surrounded by his wife Robin and daughters Mary and Allison. He is predeceased by his parents, the Reverend Dr. Ira D. Hudgins and Janet Hudgins, and mourned by his three brothers Carter, Stephen, and David, their wives, children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Jonathan faced the challenges of life with constant grace and steadfast determination accompanied by a disarming smile and an infectious laugh that will be sorely missed by everyone blessed to know him.

Jonathan is remembered as a generous fellow who delighted in the absurd predicaments and follies of human nature.  Jonathan made friends instantly and often in his life. He could converse easily with people from all walks of life; people liked Jonathan and Jonathan liked people. There was no valley too deep from which he could not climb, nor any ladder too high from which he could not descend to offer a hand to help another person upwards.

Jonathan was always humming and whistling obscure songs that became part of our daily soundtracks.  Jonathan hosted yearly Christmas parties featuring multiple trees of different themes throughout his and Robin's festive home; all were invited, many came to renew friendships, enjoy tables of food and drink, and to toast one another for the coming year.

Jonathan loved fishing, family and Civil War history. A good provider for his family, Jonathan was a competitive and fearless man, never afraid of a hard day's work. He was a proud member of the Alexandria Businessman's Club and served a term as the group's president.  Alongside his work ethic, he understood the importance of quitting time – the moment to cease work after a satisfying day and turn toward home, family, friends and hearth.

Our lives will be less joyful without him. Jonathan, we miss you and hope we will all be together on a riverbank with a beer and a fishing pole in another time and another place.

A memorial service will be held in the sanctuary of Franklin Baptist Church, 208 North High Street on Sunday, July 11 at 2 p.m. with Dr. Charles Qualls officiating.
