Newsoms – Jeannie Louis "J. L." Porter, Jr., 85, passed away June 1, 2007 at the East Pavilion. Born in Newsoms, he was a son of the late Johnnie Jo Drake Porter and J. L. Porter, Sr. A Navy veteran of WW II, he was a retired farmer, former president of the Newsoms Elementary School PTA, and former Cub Master of the Newsoms Cub Scouts. J. L. was a member of Barnes United Methodist Church and former superintendant and trustee of Mt. Horeb United Methodist Church.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 58 years, Fletcher Ann Edwards Porter; one daughter, Belinda P. Mason and husband, Greg, of Franklin; one son Bobby L. Porter and wife, Renea, of Newsoms; and one sister, Marion P. Howell of Franklin. Mr. Porter was predeceased by two brothers, Randolph and James Porter; and four sisters, Mabel P. Hill, Sallie P. O'Berry, Kathryn P. Blythe, and Inez P. Rountree.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 pm Tuesday in the chapel of Wright Funeral Home, Franklin, with the Rev. Kenneth Williams officiating. Burial, with military honors, will follow in Hollywood Cemetery, Newsoms. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 pm Monday at the funeral Home and suggest memorials be made to the East Pavilion Discretionary Fund, 100 Fairview Drive, Franklin, Va. 23851.
