James Harvey Lee, III

Courtland – James Harvey “Jimmie” Lee, III, 79, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on August 27, 2026. Raised in Courtland, Jimmie was a son of the late James H. Lee, Jr. and Effie Burgess Lee. He was also predeceased by his wife of 57 years, Ann B. Lee, and grandson, James Harvey Lee, V.

Left to cherish his memory are his children, James H. “Jamie” Lee, IV (Sherry) and Courtney Lee Applewhite (Greg); his brother, Donald J. Lee (Rebecca); grandchildren, Miranda Lee Coggsdale (Zach), William Gregory “Will” Applewhite (Megan), and Morgan Lee Beale (Miles); and a great grandson, Jase Harvey Coggsdale.

Jimmie was the President of J. H. Lee and Sons, Inc., which played a major roll in the construction of Route 58 from Holland to Emporia. He served as Vice President of the Virginia Road Builders Association – Suffolk district. Jimmie was a long-time member, deacon and trustee of Courtland Baptist Church, and was on the Board of Directors of the Bank of Franklin. He was a founding member of Southampton Speedway. Jimmie enjoyed the privilege of working with his father, brother, son, daughter, and grandchildren over the years on the construction sights and the family farm. Whether it was building a road, digging a pond, constructing a dam, or plowing a field, Jimmie played in the dirt his entire life!

He shared his love of country music, Nascar, and Alabama football with his grandchildren and always answered “yes” to their requests, even before they asked!

A Graveside Service will be held at 11AM Tuesday, September 1, 2026 at Riverside Cemetery in Courtland with Rev. Dr. John-Paul Lotz and Pastor Erik Eskelund officiating. The family will receive friends after the service in the Courtland Baptist Church Fellowship Hall and suggests that memorial donations be made to Courtland Baptist Church.

The family gives a heartfelt thanks to caregiver Sue Drake and everyone at East Pavilion/Fairview Rehabilitation and Healthcare who assisted with his care.
