Franklin – James Alton "Buddy" Ferguson, 86, passed away October 30, 2025, in his home surrounded by his wife Janie, son Kevin, and caretaker Beth. Born and raised in Newsoms, he was one of ten children born to the late James Albert Ferguson and Nellie Sue Johnson Ferguson. He was also predeceased by two sisters, Elizabeth Ann White and Evelyn F. Carr, and a brother, Robert Samuel Ferguson.
Buddy was a graduate of Southampton High School and served as a Military Policeman in the US Army. He was a retired paper maker for Union Camp/IP. Buddy was a dedicated deer hunter and a member of the Newsoms Hunt Club. He loved working in the garden and just loved being outside. He would sit for hours in his yard "watching the grass grow".
Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 59 years, Janie Francis Ferguson; a daughter, Lynette Ferguson Hill (Steve) of Haymarket, VA; a son, James Kevin Ferguson (Allison) of Powhatan, VA; four grandchildren, Genevieve Hill, Lexi Hill, Brooke Ferguson, and Connor Ferguson; two sisters, Carol Ferguson Phillips of Frankin and Dorothy Ferguson Vann of Conway, NC; four brothers, Ronnie Ferguson (Johnnie Ellen) of Franklin, Peyton Ferguson (Patsy) of Newsoms, Steve Ferguson (Pat) of Newsoms, and David Ferguson of Boykins; a brother-in-law, William Francis of Franklin; a sister-in-law, Veronica Ferguson of Newsoms; and many nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank his caretaker, Beth Goss.
A Funeral Service will be held at 2PM Tuesday, November 4, 2025 in Wright Funeral Home with Rev. Richard Inman officiating. Burial with Military Honors will follow in Southampton Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the funeral home and suggests that memorial donations be made to Hunterdale Vol. Fire Department, 201 Delaware Rd., Franklin, VA 23851 or your favorite charity.
