Norfolk – J. William Underwood III, died on April 23, 2023 in Norfolk. Born in 1946 in Suffolk to Joe W. Underwood II and Ellen Baines Williams, he grew up in Norfolk and Franklin.

He earned both undergraduate and Master's degrees from Springfield College and a PhD from Syracuse University. He practiced as a clinical psychologist in Richmond for many years, and also served on the faculty of Virginia Commonwealth University. After a few years of sailing to Central America and back, he established Norfolk Tug Company for which he served as President before retiring.

Survivors include a daughter, Katherine Anne Sandor, two sons Justin O'Neil Underwood and Alston Cooke Underwood, three brothers Oma (Doodle), Jody and Lin, a sister Ellen Marie Polyak, and his wife Mason Andrews.
