Hubert Sidney Rawlings, Jr. passed away peacefully on February 15, 2008.
Better known to friends and family as "Tubby", he was born on December 24, 1926, to Hubert Sidney and Virginia Ford Rawlings in Franklin, Virginia.
After graduating from Franklin High School, Tubby attended Virginia Tech before being drafted into the US Army during WWII. As a paratrooper with the 457th Field Artillery Battalion, he achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant. Returning home, he received his Bachelors Degree from Randolph Macon College in 1951. He went on to earn his Doctorate of Dental Surgery from the Medical College of Virginia in 1955.
Following graduation, Tubby moved home to Franklin to begin his dental practice. Soon after, he met Marie Maxwell of New Brunswick, Canada, and they wed in 1957. Tubby is survived by a daughter, Ann R. Stutts and husband Lawrence of Powhatan, Virginia; two sons, Robert Maxwell Rawlings, and Stephen Ford Rawlings of Suffolk, Virginia; two granddaughters, Alison Marie Stutts and Whitney Carver Stutts, both of Powhatan; and a sister-in-law Shirley Maxwell of Kentville, Nova Scotia.
Besides his parents, Tubby was predeceased by his wife Marie, sister, Rosalind R. Graves, and brother-in-law, Ronald J. Maxwell.
Tubby was a life-time member of High Street United Methodist Church in Franklin, and served in the Choir for many years. He was also a member of Rotary International since 1955. Tubby became interested in woodworking at the age of 14, and took on many projects over the years, often fixing things for others who knew of his skill and willingness to help.
The family will receive friends at Tubby's home, at 108 Circle Drive, in Franklin between 3:00 and 6:00pm on Saturday, February 23rd.
A funeral service will be held at the High Street United Methodist Church, 301 West First Avenue, Franklin, at 2:00pm Sunday, February 24th, with the Rev. Susan M. Reaves officiating. The graveside service will be family only. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Church, or a charity of one's choice. Wright Funeral Home is assisting the family. www.wrightfuneralhome.org
