Obituary

Norfolk – Herbert Alton "Bert" Pulley, 83, passed away October 13, 2025.  He was born and raised in Holland. He was the son of the late Alton Moten Pulley and Beulah Virginia Duke Pulley.  He was also predeceased by a daughter, Anne Pulley Clay; two sisters, Hope Starkey and Belle Roebuck; and a brother, Ronald Pulley.

Bert was a 1961 graduate of Holland High School where he was an honor student and participated in the Allstate Chorus.  Bert attended the University of Virginia, served in the Naval Air Reserve after which he worked at Union Camp for several years before returning to college and graduating from Old Dominion University with a Bachelor of Science degree.  He began his teaching career at Churchland High School.  In 1974, he moved to Georgia where he taught middle school life science and also managed a Charlais cattle farm. After returning to Virginia, Bert joined his wife as Division Sales Managers for World Book-Childcraft for 15 years in the Shenandoah Valley and later in Virginia Beach, Norfolk, and northeastern NC, after which he returned to teaching middle school life science in Virginia Beach for 15 years until his retirement.

Bert was an avid gardener. He always had pets, chickens or aquariums around. He enjoyed visiting with his family and spent countless hours caring for, entertaining, and spoiling his granddaughters and great grandsons.

Bert was a member of Newsoms United Methodist Church.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 58 years, Linda Porter Pulley; a son, Michael Pulley (Kristin) of Junction City, Oregon; two sisters, Joyce Bryant of Bealton, VA and Nadine Edwards of Marietta, GA; a brother, Phillip Pulley of Texas; a sister-in-law, Brenda Pulley of Suffolk; three granddaughters, Alishia Patterson, Adrianna and Alexis Clay; three great grandsons, Noah and Nehemiah Coleman, and Zachariah Patterson; a son-in-law, Gorman Clay; and a host of nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Service will be held at 2 PM, Saturday, October 25th at Newsoms United Methodist Church with Rev. Michael Baugham officiating. Burial will be private.
