Boykins – Elizabeth Carpenter Browne passed away at her home on February 2, 2008. "Beth" was born on the 7th of April, 1931 in Dusseldorf, Germany to the late J. Reed and Louise Carpenter of Baltimore, Md. She was predeceased also by her sister, Virginia C. Stokes. Beth is survived by her husband, Dr. Winston Melville Browne, Jr.; two sons, Dr. Winston Melville Browne, III and wife, Amy, of Boykins, Va., and Dr. Bowman Reed Browne and wife, Jodi, of Suffolk, Va.; her three beloved grandsons, Bowman Reed Browne, Jr., Michael Cole Browne, and Winston Melville Browne, IV; as well as her sister, Judith C. Rabenold of Orleans, Mass, and many nieces and nephews.
Beth graduated from Westhampton College in 1953 where she lettered in girls field hockey. She taught school in three different school systems, Richmond, Va., Baltimore, Md., and Southampton County. She was an active member of Boykins Baptist Church where she served as a deacon and participated in the Ruth Bible Class. She was also past chairman of the Southampton County Board of Social Services. Beth's hobbies included photography and meeting friends for lunches and laughter. Most of all, Beth was an extraordinary mother, wife, and friend. She spent most of her adult life loving and nurturing her family through her unending support, guidance, and affection.
Beth and Winston met as collegiate classmates and were wed on August 9, 1958. During their 49 years of marriage, Beth was a faithful and loving companion to Winston. Their life's journey produced many wonderful experiences and memories. With Winston by her side, Beth especially enjoyed traveling and the warmth and
comfort of her lifelong friends, but she derived the most joy and happiness from spoiling her three beloved grandchildren. During her 76 years of life, Beth touched the lives of so many. Her humor, thoughtfulness, and caring nature produced countless friendships. Beth dearly loved all of her family and friends and never met a stranger.
The funeral will be held at Boykins Baptist Church on Wednesday, February 6th, at 1:00 pm with burial at the Beechwood Cemetery. Afterwards, the family will receive friends at Boykins Baptist Church Fellowship Hall. Memorial donations may be sent to Boykins Baptist Church, P. O.
