Obituary

Courtland – Elaine Downs "Lainey" Harding, 83, passed away on November 8, 2025, after a battle with cancer, surrounded by her family in her home in Courtland, Virginia.  She was born in Oak Hill, West Virginia on June 7, 1942 to the late Gerald Eugene and Helen Hawks Downs. She was also predeceased by her husband, Harrison Hamlet Harding and a brother, William David Downs. She is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth Harding Marshall (David), two grandchildren, Harrison Woodhouse Marshall and Virginia Harding Marshall Ware (Robert), and her sister, Kay Downs Candelario.

Lainey and Hamlet were High School Sweethearts and were married for fifty years. He was the love of her life. She graduated from Greensville County High School and continued her education at the Medical College of Virginia in Radiologic Technology. She practiced in this profession for years, mostly at Southampton Memorial Hospital.

Lainey was a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Courtland and attended Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Franklin. She always said that her grandchildren were the greatest source of joy in her life, filling her days with laughter, love and unforgettable memories.

A Graveside Service will be held at 11AM Saturday, November 15, 2025 in Riverside Cemetery, 22373 Main Street, Courtland, VA with Pastor Beverly Collinsworth officiating.  Due to Lainey's love for dogs, please consider a memorial donation to your favorite animal organization or St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Courtland or Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Franklin.
