Boykins – Dorothy Edwards Lassiter passed away peacefully at her home in Boykins, Virginia on August 21, 2025.  She was predeceased by her husband of 65 years, Rolo Turner Lassiter, Jr. Dot was born in Little Texas, Virginia on April 20, 1932 to Floyd and Lillie Belle Edwards. The youngest of 11 children, Dot fondly remembered a loving childhood that was carefree and fun with her 10 brothers and sisters who cared deeply for one another until their deaths. Dot was the last surviving Edwards child.

A loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother, Dot was always proud of her children's, grandchildren's, and great grandchildren's accomplishments and well being. Her family will miss the loving interest she took in their lives and the joy she took from their presence.

Dot is survived by her children Rolo T. Lassiter, III and his wife Pammy, Lisa Haver and her husband David, and Lil Hawthorne and her husband Johnny. She was beloved "Granny" to her six grandchildren: Joey Lassiter and his wife Cassie, Dr. Brian Haver and his wife Maggie, Grant Haver and his wife Stephanie, Will Hawthorne and his wife Rachel, Ashton Hawthorne, and Ann Morgan Hawthorne. Her seven great-grandchildren will remember her with love: Lily Marie Lassiter, Luka Stephen Lassiter, Lucien Turner Haver, Maebelle Elizabeth Haver, Henley Claire Hawthorne, John William Hawthorne III, and Riley David Hawthorne. She is also survived by loving members of the Edwards and Lassiter families.

Dot graduated from Drewryville High School where she earned the Pope Award for academic achievement. She was on the Dean's list at Longwood College, graduating in 1954 with a Bachelor of Science in Home Economics Education.  After college, she served as the Home Demonstration Agent in Suffolk, Virginia, where she enjoyed sharing her cooking and seamstress skills. Once settled in Boykins, after her marriage, she became an active member of Boykins Baptist Church and worked the rest of her life to serve the local community through her church, serving in the church choir, the Woman's Missionary Union, and chaperoning countless trips with the youth. For many years, Dot taught Sunday School to the Ruth Bible Class, one of her favorite ways to serve her church community. The Ruth Girls, as they were known, were dedicated to not only studying God's word but showing God's love through service to others. Over the years, Dot and the Ruth Girls enjoyed laughter and friendship alongside the service and work they did together.

Beyond Boykins Baptist, Dot was a big supporter of the larger Boykins community throughout her life. She was a member of the Boykins Woman's Club and the Home Demonstration Club, where she served in various positions, as well as serving on the Board of Trustees of the Walter Cecil Rawls Library and Museum. As an avid reader who instilled in her children and grandchildren a love for reading and books, this was a great honor for her.

In addition to her devotion to Christ and her community, she loved the beach, the land, and spending time with her family. Dot spent many hours working in the garden and in her yard. Many mornings, she could be found walking through the town and her neighborhood.  She treasured her time sitting on the deck with her family at Kill Devil Hills.

The funeral will be held on Monday, August 25th at 11:00 in Boykins Baptist Church. Memorial donations may be made to Boykins Baptist Church.
