David Emanuel Hanson

Suwannee, FL - David Emanuel Hanson, 86, of Suwannee, Florida and Franklin, Virginia, passed away peacefully at his daughter’s home in Winchester, Virginia, on September 4, 2026. Born in Quincy, Massachusetts, to Oscar E. and Elsie L. Swanson Hanson. David spent his career as a beloved teacher of Earth Science and U.S. History.

David and his wife, Joye, spent much of their married life overseas teaching in the Panama Canal Zone Schools and a career with the Department of Defense Dependents Schools (DoDDS). He retired from Seoul, South Korea, in 2004. His former students have continued to share their condolences and memories, reflecting the lasting impact he had on the many young people he taught.

David married Joyce Ann Hanson on June 24, 1967. They shared 58 years of marriage before her passing on August 15, 2025.

David is survived by daughters Rejoyce Lunceford (Rob) and Heather Hanson (Greg Branom); grandchildren Zachary, Douglas, Amelia (fiancé Dakota Ludwick), Ryan, Alex Branom, and Presley Larson (Nick); and six great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held Saturday, September 12, 2026, from 10:30 to 11:00 a.m. at Wright Funeral Home & Crematory in Franklin, Virginia, with the funeral service beginning at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. James H. Hyatt, Jr. officiating.  A graveside service at Rosemont Cemetery in Sedley, Virginia will follow, with a reception afterward at Franklin Congregational Christian Church.

David’s favorite color was blue, and those attending are encouraged to wear blue in his honor.
