Courtland – Charles Fox Urquhart, III, 66, CDR, USN (Ret), died September 10, 2008 at his residence with his wife and children at his side. The only son of Charles F. and Dorothy Harper Urquhart, he was a lifetime resident of Courtland.
Fox graduated from Washington and Lee University, 1964, undergraduate and 1970 Law School. He was a single practitioner of law in Courtland, 1971-1994, and retired as Deputy Commonwealth's Attorney for the city of Suffolk in 2007. He was a member of the Virginia, Southampton, and Suffolk Bar Associations.
A cradle Episcopalian, Fox was a lifelong member of St. Luke's Church in Courtland. He served the Episcopal Diocese of Southern Virginia for 37 years as a member of the Ridley Charitable Foundation, serving as chairman of the Scholarship Committee for over 20 years and most recently as Foundation President.
Fox served on active duty with the Navy 1964-67 and retired with the rank of Commander from active reserve duty in 1990. Among many other organizations, he was a member of Sons of the American Revolution, Sons of Confederate Veterans, Clan Urquhart Association, the Virginia and American Camellia Societies, Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity, American Legion Post 73, and the Southampton County Historical Society. For over 20 years, he has been the proud caretaker of the Urquhart Family Cemetery at his ancestral home, Oak Grove Plantation, outside of Ivor, Virginia.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife and best friend of 35 years, Gayle Davis Urquhart; one son, James B. Urquhart of Stuarts Draft and one daughter, Jill C. Urquhart of Charlottesville. Also surviving is a sister, Mary Louisa U. Bryant and husband, Lloyd, of Cary, NC; brothers-in-law, John E. Davis of Leesburg, Mark R. Davis of Richmond, James D. Davis of Mount Sidney; sister-in-law, Debbie D. Rogers of Woodstock, GA.; seven nieces; four nephews; and one beloved great-nephew. He was predeceased by his parents. His special friends, Mr. Roberts, Kate, Lizzie, and Cassie are waiting to welcome him with wagging tails and sloppy dog kisses.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p. m. Sunday, September 14, at Emmanuel Episcopal Church. A private graveside service with military honors will be held in the Urquhart Family Cemetery near Ivor on Saturday, September 13 at 10:00 a. m. The family will receive friends at a reception after the memorial service on Sunday and at the home at other times.
