Alma B. Henry

FRANKLIN – Alma Bell Henry, 90, widow of James E. Henry, died surrounded by family on April 21 in Southampton Memorial Hospital. Born in Franklin, she was the only child of James Nicholas and Corinne Forehand Bell. After graduating from Franklin High School in 1934, she attended Stratford College in Danville. Upon returning to Franklin, she worked as a secretary at both Camp Manufacturing Company and the Virginia Department of Highways. She met her future husband, James E. Henry, in Franklin and was married in 1940. After sixty two years of marriage, her beloved husband died in July 2002.
She was a life long and active member of High Street United Methodist Church. She was an avid bridge player, a member of the Franklin Woman's Club, the Garden Club, Cypress Cove Country Club, and a lifetime member of the James L. Camp YMCA where she played volleyball and aerobics in her early years and then enjoyed swimming and water aerobics up until a few years prior to her death.
Survivors include a son, James E. Henry, Jr. and his wife, Susan, of Vienna and a daughter, Corinne H. Barkdull and her husband, Kevin, of Midlothian; six grandchildren, Harold C. Hill, III, of Richmond; Corinne H. Fitzgerald, of Powhatan; James P. Henry of Suffolk; Susan E. Henry of Falls Church; Sarah D. Hill of Richmond; and Jonathan B. Henry of Arlington; and five great granddaughters.
A funeral will be held at 11 am on Tuesday, April 24 at High Street United Methodist Church in Franklin. Burial will follow at Poplar Spring Cemetery. Wright Funeral Home will handle arrangements. A reception will follow the funeral at The Village at Woods Edge, 1401 N. High Street. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday evening between 7 and 9 pm.
